How Chasing Cows Made Me Feel Like a Hero And Why Challenges Matter

How Chasing Cows Made Me Feel Like a Hero

Have you ever had to chase a runaway cow? It sounds funny, right? Trust me - it was! But it also taught me some important lessons. Growing up in a traditional African community, we lived closely connected with nature. We built our homes near rivers or streams, creating unwritten agreements with the animals we shared the land with. I call it the traditional existence model.

We took care of two kinds of animals every day. Semi-domestic animals, like cows, donkeys, horses, goats, and sheep, were taken by groups of kids - including me - to fields to graze and drink water. We always made sure they got back home safely by sunset.

Domestic animals, like dogs, chickens, guinea fowls, and pigs, stayed close to our houses, making them easier to look after. Taking care of goats and sheep was pretty easy, but cows were tricky! They loved running away, making us chase after them. One time, a cow ran far away, and my friend and I had to follow it for hours. When we finally brought it home after sunset, we were tired but felt amazing. It made me feel brave, proud, and confident—almost like a superhero.

This shows something important: facing challenges is good for us.

Today, many of us live comfortably in what I call a modern existence model, with everything made easy for us. But sometimes, being too comfortable can actually take away our happiness and stop us from growing.

Are we missing out by being too comfortable?

I challenge you to add a little adventure back into your life. Try a new hobby, help out more at home, or do something you've never tried before - maybe something you'd normally pay someone else to do. Facing these small challenges can boost your happiness and confidence, helping you feel strong and connected again. Become your own hero, one challenge at a time.
